On Sunday 17th July, the Queen’s Baton Relay finally arrived in Stockport, before continuing its journey across the UK towards Birmingham for the opening ceremony of the 2022 Commonwealth Games. The event was a resounding success, which saw roaring support from members of the public along Stockport’s relay route and around St. Peter’s Square. Stockport has been awarded a share of £2.4million to tackle anti-social behaviour and make streets safer for residents in the town centre and Brinnington. The Safer Streets Fund, launched by the Home Office, aims to tackle issues that blight communities by putting measures in place to prevent crime and anti-social behaviour and support victims. Totally Stockport Krazy Races, the free to attend soapbox derby coming to town on Sunday 28th May next year, was launched at Stockport Makers market less than a week ago and has already taken Stockport by storm. Merseyway Shopping Centre in Stockport is promising local parents’ massive savings on next year’s school uniform as it opens a pop-up second-hand school uniform shop in the town centre. Accepting all pre-worn school uniform items from Stockport schools, the pop-up shop will be reselling old items for 50p each, with all proceeds going to Chelwood Foodbank. The centre will be accepting donations from until 19th August 2022, which can be dropped at the dedicated collection bins in the undercover mall located outside Specsavers. Leader of Stockport Council, Cllr Mark Hunter, announced at yesterday’s Full Council Meeting (Thursday 14 July) that the town’s Central Library will continue to offer library services to the borough’s residents.
