Eat. Sleep. Green. Repeat.

Urban Greening Masterplan launches in Stockport

Totally Stockport has launched a new masterplan as part of its Going Green programme, setting out a bold and practical vision for a greener, healthier and more vibrant town centre.

Developed by Layer.studio in consultation with retailers and residents, ‘Going Green’ focuses on the places people use every day and sets out a strategy, toolkit and initial projects to support regeneration, wellbeing and economic activity.

With the aim to create a connected, people-focused green infrastructure network, streets, squares and key routes have been reviewed to create a one connected green network.

The masterplan spans the 80Ha Totally Stockport BID Boundary and combines quick wins with longer-term visions in key areas, setting out a practical route to a town centre that’s even more walkable, attractive and economically active.

Paul Kelsall, BID Director at Totally Stockport and co-owner of Stockport based Kelsall Architects, said: “At its core, ‘Going Green’ is about joining the green dots.

“From Merseyway to the Underbanks and Chestergate, the masterplan shows how simple, well-placed changes such as more planting and enhanced greenery can change the face of the town centre

“This is not a distant vision. It is designed to move fast. The plan combines quick, visible wins with bigger long-term change. It starts now, builds momentum and sets a clear direction for future investment.

“Whilst aesthetics are important, it’s not just about how things look. Greening helps cool streets, clean the air, support wildlife and improve everyday wellbeing; so it’s a win-win. It also strengthens the town centre economy by bringing more people in, encouraging them to stay longer and backing local businesses.”

Shaun Freeman-Jones, BID Manager at Totally Stockport, said “we are constantly talking to businesses and visitors about their town centre experience, and the recurring theme of greening always filters through. We believe this plan will help us build on the amazing work that has already been completed by Stockport Council in recent years”

Danny Crump, director of urbanism at Layer.studio, added: “Eat. Sleep. Green. Repeat isn’t just a slogan. It is a mindset. It’s about putting green at the centre of how Stockport grows.

“Stockport already has plenty of new green assets, but there is always room for more. The aim is to connect these into a coherent network, using greening  as a tool for improving walkability, boosting footfall, supporting biodiversity and enhancing health & wellbeing”

Designed to work for both people and nature and make Stockport easier to walk around and spend time in, the masterplan brings existing green spaces together into a connected network that delivers greater value for the town.

This is greening as infrastructure. Better movement. Stronger businesses. Cleaner air. A town built to handle the climate ahead.
