The Race to Space
The first person to travel to space was Yuri Gagarin, a Soviet cosmonaut.
On April 12, 1961, Gagarin piloted the Vostok 1 spacecraft and completed one orbit around the Earth, making him the first human to journey into outer space. His historic flight lasted about 108 minutes.
Gagarin’s accomplishment marked a significant milestone in space exploration and paved the way for future manned space missions.
The first man to set foot on the moon was Neil Armstrong, an American astronaut.
On July 20, 1969, as part of NASA’s Apollo 11 mission, Armstrong descended from the lunar module named “Eagle” and became the first human to walk on the lunar surface. His famous words, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind,” captured the significance of this momentous achievement.
Armstrong, along with fellow astronaut Buzz Aldrin, spent about two and a half hours outside the spacecraft, collecting samples and conducting experiments before returning to the lunar module.
Their successful moon landing remains a landmark event in human history and a testament to the advancements of space exploration.
