Stockport’s Garrick Theatre – the oldest ‘little theatre’ in the UK – is looking for a bold, imaginative artist (or artist collective) to design and deliver a large-scale mural that celebrates creativity, community, and the magic of live performance.
Totally Stockport and the Garrick Theatre are commissioning murals that bring the spirit of theatre to life on the building’s exterior, inviting locals and visitors alike to connect with the vibrant history and future of the Garrick.
The key aim for this mural is to draw attention to the building. We are thinking, vibrant, colour and energy.
We have added photos of the key areas for painting but we are open to flexible discussions on what is possible with the budget.
The key areas on the building include:
- Brick gable (A6)
- Rendered gable Grey (Exchange Street)

What We’re Looking For:
We want to see your vision. That means:
• A short proposal with a few initial ideas (1–2 paragraphs max)
• Light sketches or concept visuals (nothing fully polished yet!)
• A link to your portfolio or examples of previous large-scale work
Your mural idea might include:
• A nod to the Garrick’s heritage and historic productions
• Celebrations of Stockport’s cultural identity
• Imagery of performance, storytelling, transformation, or community
• Bold colours and dynamic composition that energise the space
